Steps to Get Your Texas LTC / CHL

Please note that these steps apply to most applicants, but uncommon situations may require additional or different steps.

The following paragraphs provide an easy-to-follow outline of the steps required to apply for and obtain a License to Carry (LTC) in Texas.

ELIGIBILITY

Are you eligible? 

See page 10 GC §411.172. ELIGIBILITY

DPS will NOT refund your application fee if you are not eligible for the license. Please be sure you understand the eligibility criteria before you apply. Contact the DPS directly with any questions.

 

 

Steps 2 and 3 can be completed in any order

REGISTER FOR LTC CLASS

NO PAPERWORK IS NEEDED FOR CLASS

 

Register online to take the license to carry handgun (LTC) class taught in person by a TXDPS certified LTC instructor

 

Once you have completed the LTC Class, you will be given your

Certificate of Training LTC 100

 

It will be your responsibiltiy to submit it to the Texas Department of Public Safety's Handgun Licensing Program.  

 

Your (LTC100) expires in 2 years.

APPLY TO TEXAS DPS FOR LTC LICENSE

Fee

What is the cost? The Texas DPS processing fee is different from our class fee.

$40 Standard Fee for Initial License
$25 Military Veteran - ETS or Retired over 365 days
$0 Active Duty - Includes Active Guard, Texas State Guard & Reserves

 

You must complete Step 3

Fee

What is the cost? $9.95 to IdentoGO®

 

Do not buy pictures from anyone if you live in Texas. The state will not use them. The state will use your current TX driver’s license or ID photo as your LTC photo.

You must complete STEP 3 before scheduling your appointment. 

SUBMIT SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS TO TEXAS DPS

ALL APPLICANTS

Once you successfully complete the class, you will receive the class completion certificate.   (known as LTC-100 / CHL-100 / LTC-101) 

 

It is the student's responsibilty to upload the LTC 100 certificate directly to Texas DPS

 

Your (LTC100) expires in 2 years.

 

You must complete STEP 3 before submitting your supporting documents to the State

WAIT!

Await processing by Texas DPS.  

Depending on the time of year, processing takes a few days to several weeks. 

 

DPS will make every effort to issue your license within 60 days of receiving the completed application packet. If the application is incomplete or requires additional information to complete the background check, you will be notified in writing by the Texas DPS

Documents you need to submit to Texas DPS if you are any of the following:

Foreign born

If you were born outside of the United States of America (U.S.), submit a copy of one of the following documents:

  • U.S. Passport,
  • Certificate of Naturalization, or
  • Certificate of Birth Abroad.

Veteran / Separated Service Member

If you are a prior service member, submit a copy of your DD 214 (copy of "Member 4" / "long" / "unedited" / "undeleted").

 

Active Duty or Reserve Service Member

If you are Active Duty, Active Reserve, or National Guard, submit a copy of your Military ID (front and back) and one of the following documents:

  • Copy of current Leave and Earnings Statement (LES),
  • Copy of current active duty orders,
  • Copy of current enlistment contract, or
  • Letter from your current commanding officer.

 

Not a Texas Resident / Out of state

Submit a copy of your state drivers license or identification card in color (front and back).

 

Law Enforcement

Retired and active members of the law enorfcement community (for example, judges, prosecutors, peace officers, jailers) should refer to the Texas DPS instructions here.
